Does a division exist between the perspectives of religion and psychology? Why are so few mental health professionals trained to integrate religion and spirituality into their work with clients? What roadblocks might one encounter in the attempt to discuss spirituality in a clinical setting? In this free, one-day conference, psychotherapists, scholars, and clergy engage in conversation about the universal search for meaning and the value of religious and psychological approaches.
During the morning session, participants will explore the origins of psychology’s often negative perspective on religion and spirituality and will learn about the many historical and contemporary conversations between psychology and religious traditions. Through lecture, dialogue, and small group exercises, participants in the afternoon session will discover practical ways to approach spirituality and religion in their work with clients.
Presenters will include: William Parsons, PhD, assistant professor of religious studies at Rice University and author of The Enigma of the Oceanic Feeling; and Elizabeth Maynard, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at the University of St. Thomas and a licensed psychologist. |
