Why are we fascinated with the apocalyptic? Cinematic, religious, and political images of the apocalypse pervade our everyday lives, and crises ranging from the stock market crash to pandemic diseases and other natural disasters evoke apocalyptic concerns. In this course, we will survey images of the apocalyptic in modern culture and read ancient apocalyptic texts, both Jewish and Christian. We will also explore whether this fascination with apocalypse is a byproduct of Western religious traditions or is the expression of a broader psychic disposition.
Handouts of readings will be provided.
